Safe and economical DIY detergents

Using packaged detergents is a very convenient and easy option for doing laundry, but they also come with so many chemicals that can be harmful to humans and the environment as well. Constant use of these harsh chemicals can also lead to various skin problems, so it is always a good idea to explore some DIY options at home. Here are some safe-to-use DIY detergents that are effective and also economical.

Fragrant liquid laundry detergent
A very easy and efficient way to make your own laundry detergent, this only needs ingredients like washing soda, baking soda, castile soap, and your favorite essential oil. Here’s what you need to do:

Take a 2-gallon bucket.

Add half a cup of washing soda to this bucket.

After this, add hot water to the soda, just enough to cover the whole ingredient.

Make sure to mix it thoroughly to help it dissolve.

Only once, when it has dissolved, move on to the next step.

Add half a cup of baking soda and mix till it dissolves too.

Now, fill the bucket with hot water again and leave just enough space at the top – around an inch.

Now add the castile soap – three-fourth cups of it, followed by 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil. You can use lemon, lavender, lemongrass – anything that you like.

Carefully stir to mix it well.

Your DIY detergent is ready! Transfer this to small bottles or a big bottle with a funnel, making usage convenient during laundry time.

Powdered lavender laundry detergent
Another easy way to make your own laundry detergent, except this is in a powdered form that some people prefer. It may also be easier to store in bottles or jars. Here is how you can make a coconut lavender detergent with easy-to-find ingredients.

Grate a bar of castile soap using a grater or a food processor.

To this mixture, add a couple of tablespoons of washing soda.

Mix it thoroughly.

Add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda and Epsom salt to this mixture.

Stir it properly again so all ingredients are mixed well.

Add 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil to this powdered mixture and mix it thoroughly so it gets distributed evenly in the whole lot. Your powdered detergent is ready! Use 1-2 tbsp depending on the laundry load.

Always ensure you are not allergic to any ingredients used to avoid any kind of reaction on the skin or otherwise.
